We were all paper rich. We were all getting paid in options. Then I seem to recall a "little something" called the Telecom and Internet bomb. Stocks were inflated, people bought stuff against their portfolio, just like the real estate game, and then the bubble burst. Hourly margin calls, business models falling apart, layoffs by the thousands, and stock values tumbling. The suburban Boston district has been competitive, with Mr. Brown first winning it in a 2003 special election with only 51%.

This time it wasn't even close. GOP State Representative Richard Ross defeated Democrat Peter Smulowitz, an emergency-room physician, with 62% of the vote. Mr. Ross even won Needham, a liberal bastion in the district, by over 200 votes. "The Democratic machine is striking out in Massachusetts," claimed Jennifer Nassour, the state's GOP chairwoman.

Not quite. The highly competitive race for governor has seen Democratic Governor Deval Patrick rebound somewhat from his recent dismal poll numbers. He now leads Republican Charlie Baker, a protégé of former GOP Governor Bill Weld, and state Treasurer Tim Cahill, who left the Democratic Party to run as an independent last year. In a new Rasmussen poll, Mr. Patrick scores 45% support against 31% for his GOP opponent Mr. Baker.

But Mr. Patrick's improvement appears to be based largely on the faltering of Mr. Cahill, who has lately been the subject of GOP attack ads. Mr. Baker, a former health-care executive, is still having trouble putting together the coalition of economic and social conservatives that Mr. Brown assembled. Much of Mr. Cahill's 15% support in polls represents social conservatives who remain put off by Mr. Baker's failure to make overtures to them.

-- John Fund

WSJ.com's Political Diary - FAIR Tax vs OBAMACare

Show of Horrors

In the two special elections for the House being held next week, Democrats appear to have thrown in the towel in a Hawaii race where the presence of two Democrats on the ballot looks like it may hand the seat to a Republican.

But in the Pennsylvania coal-mining district once held by the late Jack Murtha, former Murtha aide Mark Critz appears to have made a comeback with a flurry of TV commercials accusing GOP businessman Tim Burns of wanting to raise taxes. A Democratic campaign committee ad accuses Mr. Burns of supporting "a 23% national sales tax" and "corporate tax loopholes for companies that ship jobs overseas." The latest public poll shows Mr. Critz with a 45% to 40% lead.

Mr. Burns says his record has been distorted. He denies he wants to outsource jobs overseas. He also claims any quotes supporting a so-called FAIR tax reform were "taken out of context" and notes that Mr. Critz hasn't pointed out that advocates of a national sales tax want to completely replace the current federal income tax.

That may be, but Mr. Burns's plight shows just how tricky tax reform can be to raise in a hardscrabble blue-collar district where voters are deeply suspicious of change. Republicans have made progress in the race by calling for repeal of ObamaCare, which is viewed with hostility by many of the district's seniors. But the ads blasting Mr. Burns on a national sales tax have erased many of those gains.

Next week we will find out which set of attacks had the most resonance with voters and just how much the Obama health care bill will be a drag on Democratic prospects this fall.

-- John Fund

WSJ.com's Political Diary - Our Men in Baghdad

Our Men in Baghdad

When Barack Obama named Christopher Hill to be his ambassador to Iraq, he praised the diplomat for having "the pragmatism and skill that we need right now." Republican Sen. Sam Brownback strongly disagreed.

In a March 2009 letter to the President, the Kansas Republican slammed Mr. Hill for engaging in "evasive and unprofessional activities" as the U.S. representative to the Six Party Talks over North Korea. Mr. Brownback also noted that Mr. Hill spoke no Arabic and had never served in a diplomatic post in the Middle East. This was not, he wrote, "the time to appoint an ambassador who may need the equivalent of a crash course in Iraqi affairs."

Now the administration seems to have come around to Sen. Brownback's view. Word is that Mr. Hill will be leaving Baghdad after barely a year to become dean of the University of Denver's foreign service school. Supposedly, Mr. Hill took the job intent on spending only a year in Baghdad, but several sources tell me he had a particularly strained relationship with U.S. military commanders, including Gen. Ray Odierno. His lack of Arabic would also have made him poorly suited to play the role his predecessor Ryan Crocker did in easing tensions between Iraq's dueling political factions.

The good news is that Mr. Hill is to be replaced with Jim Jeffrey, currently the U.S. ambassador to Turkey. Mr. Jeffrey, a Vietnam vet, has already done one tour of duty in the Baghdad embassy as former ambassador John Negroponte's deputy. He was also George W. Bush's deputy national security adviser. The ambassador gets good reviews from his erstwhile White House colleagues, who think the New Englander's easy manner, Middle East expertise and military background will serve him well. His nomination is another reminder that, when it comes to Iraq policy, Barack Obama's presidency is little more than an extension of his predecessor's.

-- Bret Stephens

Shaken to my core... Many are skeptical, but at least he has an underling who knows all about the subject.

Ms. DeParle ran the Medicare program under Bill Clinton, then left to serve on the boards of several medical care companies that later were charged with Medicare fraud. Five of the companies subsequently paid out $566 million in fraud or product liability settlements, with Medicare often being the victim of the alleged fraud. Meanwhile, she earned millions of dollars in board fees.

We can thank Investigative Reporting Workshop of the American University School of Communication for this information. It conducted a multi-month investigation. In one case, Ms. DeParle joined the board of Specialty Laboratories Inc., a California medical testing company, just two months before "federal investigators suspended Medicare payments and threatened to revoke Specialty's license to operate. The company agreed to pay a $700,000 fine. . . . Specialty was also sued this year by the state of California which seeks to recover hundreds of millions of dollars for the state's Medicaid program for what [California Attorney General Jerry] Brown termed 'massive . . . fraud and kickbacks' over the past 15 years."

One should be careful in jumping to conclusions about true culpability for alleged Medicare fraud. It's not infrequent that regulators bully firms into paying penalties to avoid legal costs or remain in good standing as government contractors. In some cases, the DeParle-connected firms did not admit to fraud or the cases are still unsettled.

But the bottom line, according of the AU Reporting Workshop, is still hard to jibe with the Obama administration's verbal war on the evils of lobbying: "In touting DeParle's accomplishments when he appointed her in March, Obama didn't mention the lucrative private-sector career she built since September 2000, when she left her government job running Medicare for the Clinton administration. Records show she earned more than $6.6 million since early 2001 . . . And the public wasn't told that much of that corporate career was built at companies that have frequently had to defend themselves against federal investigations. Critics see DeParle's re-emergence as a classic case of Washington 'revolving door' syndrome, despite Obama's suggestions that he would shut that door."

By the end of the Clinton administration, Medicare fraud was estimated by the U.S. General Accounting Office to costs taxpayers tens of billions of dollars a year. This happened on Ms. DeParle's watch. It makes one wonder how this czarina is going to root out waste when so much of it piled up the last time she was in charge.

-- Stephen Moore

The Specter Steamroller - From WSJ.com's Political Diary

All-Out for Specter

The big question since Sen. Arlen Specter switched parties was just how hard his new Democratic patrons would fight to get him re-elected next year. The early answer? Hard enough that Majority Leader Harry Reid is willing to shut down the nation's business on behalf of the Pennsylvania Senator this afternoon.

Mr. Reid announced on Friday that the Senate would hold no votes after 3 p.m. today. According to CQ Politics, "His office later said that the scheduling decision was meant to accommodate a long-planned fundraiser that President Obama is headlining in Philadelphia to benefit Specter's campaign," CQ reported. And not just any fundraiser: The event will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center and feature many of the state's prominent Democrats, including Gov. Ed Rendell and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.

One of the organizers, Comcast executive and Democratic heavyweight David L. Cohen, circulated the details to potential guests in a widely reported email: The night will include a cocktail reception at $1000 per head, a special reception open to those who raise at least $10,000, and a super-special dinner for which "an individual must write (not raise) a minimum of $10,000 or raise $50,000 to attend." Attendees at the dinner, Mr. Cohen added, will get their picture taken with President Obama and Senator Specter. Organizers are hoping to raise $2.5 million.

One Pennsylvania Democrat not likely to show up is Rep. Joe Sestak. The party went to great lengths to dissuade Mr. Sestak from running against Senator Specter in next year's Senate primary. Gov. Rendell at one point promised that the Democratic congressman would "get killed" and "marginalized" and fade "into political obscurity" if he defied the party's wishes. But Mr. Sestak sensed an eagerness among the liberal base for an alternative to the party's Republican-turned-Democrat designee.

Yesterday, the now-candidate fired off a pointed response to the Reid announcement: "I urge Arlen Specter to speak with Harry Reid and ask that the Senate hold votes Tuesday afternoon, instead of delaying the public's business. This gets to a larger issue, and why I am running against the establishment's wishes, because too often it favors the powerful and well-connected who are also too often rewarded at the cost of those who are at the bottom. Can Arlen Specter -- or anyone in this fundraiser -- explain why it is okay to hold up the entire U.S. Senate to benefit his political campaign, but it's -- in Arlen's own words -- a 'court martial' offense for missing a few primarily procedural votes?"

That's a question some Pennsylvania Democrats are probably asking themselves. A Franklin & Marshall poll late last month showed Mr. Specter still leading his challenger by 26 points, even as his "unfavorable" ratings have also been rising steadily since his party switch. But party leaders appear to be doubling down. The fundraiser is part of a bigger Specter strategy to stockpile enough to cash to swamp his lesser known rival, whose greatest foreseeable challenge will be in raising enough money to remain competitive.
-- Kim Strassel

Where Does the "WE" Come from in Health Care

I felt the need to share a post from the Black Conservatives Yahoo Groups Courtesy of NYCBlackAmerican

The collective 'we' are building up massive debt in trying to keep up with health care costs. Well, let me tell you a little something about this part of the 'we'.

For 44 years, I contributed to my own health care insurance program. When I was dissatisfied with the program, I changed it at the once-a-year option I got to do so.

I paid social security taxes.

I paid for medicare, Parts A & B.

I paid my co-pays which were not reimbursed by anybody and, in some cases, had to meet a deductible before I could even begin to claim benefits.

Now, where has all that money I and my employers paid into the Medicare system gone to? Here are some of the benefits distributed by Medicare Part B using my dime: physicians' services; home health care; services and supplies , including drugs and biologicals which cannot be self-administered, furnished incidental to physicians' services, diagnostic x-rays and other tests; surgical dressings, and splints, casts and other devices used for fractures and dislocations, etc., etc.

My private insurance, which I must keep, also provides me with all of these services. I am only eligible for Medicare Part A, hospital insurance. I hope my hospital takes it [many do not]. Why do I need Medicare? I don't and did not choose to have it.

So, when Obama speaks in terms of 'we', just who is he talking about? Not me. The bigger issue is ACCESS to care. Which is the real challenge of preventive and primary care. Lot's of people have coverage, and still cannot get care, because of lack of medical personnel, the attack on the nurse practitioner (including midwifery), and advanced or modern facilities. Even those who do not have coverage, still in an emergency get CARE, IF THEY CAN GET TO IT.

A few years ago, I suffered a miscarriage. I had EXCELLENT INSURANCE. however the town where I live although has many doctors and hospitals, only one facility has an OB/GYN unit and a handful of OB/GYNs and only one taking new patients, after a 5 week wait list. There are many places across America with this same phenomenon.

I like to say that Health care today, is lacking localized medicine, and like WALMART has killed the neighborhood retailer and grocer, BIG BOX hospitals with its Hospitalists have killed the neighbood clinic! A Hospitalist, is a hospital employed doctor, so instead of having his own practice, 0r is a partner in a practice of other doctors, this doctor just gets a salary from the Hospital. In this model, the hospital worries with the basic business operations of insurance, billing, staffing, etc. related to caring for the patient. It is not necessarily like a HMO, but could at times feel like one. This model is encouraged by the lack of tort reform. Without that, then the malpractice insurance makes it unsustainable for the local health care facilities to exist.

So can we please get back to the issue of CARE, and ask our elected officials how is providing insurance going to fix this umbrella problem!!!

My $ 0.02

Tanya Callaway Crews

Under 40 Grassroots GOP We Are doing It for Ourselves!!! Ms. Johnson has been a prominent contributor to Democrats for years -- boosting Barack Obama's candidacy and serving as the second-largest donor to sitting Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine.

Ms. Johnson told reporters yesterday she was backing Mr. McConnell because "he understands that we have to help businesses in our state -- both big and small -- thrive so that we put Virginians back to work."

Creigh Deeds, the Democratic candidate for governor, is worried about other potential Democratic defectors. Former Gov. Doug Wilder says he hasn't responded to appeals from aides to President Obama to endorse Mr. Deeds. "I told them, 'You need to tell me why,'" Mr. Wilder told reporters, noting that he's had differences with Mr. Deeds during the latter's 18-year-career in the legislature.

Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine continues to struggle to nail down black support despite a fly-in appearance by President Obama last week. A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Mr. Corzine winning African-American voters by only 66% to 29% -- well below normal numbers for a Democratic nominee. Republican Chris Christie has some appeal to minority voters because of his reputation as a crusader against public corruption.

The Rev. Reginald T. Jackson, leader of the Black Ministers Council of New Jersey, says Mr. Corzine could bolster his inner-city support by backing a pending bill in the legislature that would allow companies to use tax deductions to pay tuitions for poor kids to attend the public, charter or private school of their choice. "If you announced today that you have $500,000 in scholarships in Orange tomorrow, people would line up in Orange tonight," Rev. Jackson, who heads a large church in Orange, told North Jersey News. Even his own Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told NBC's "Meet the Press:" "Our Democratic friends are having a hard time selling this to their own members, a very difficult time."

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, one of Mr. Obama's earliest supporters in his 2008 campaign, has also weighed in with some advice not to demand too much from Congress, based on his own experience inheriting implementation of his state's "universal" health care plan -- which was passed in 2005. Mr. Patrick recently had to impose cuts in the program, which has seen large cost overruns.

"The untold story about the Massachusetts experiment has been that we finally recognized that there were more than just the usual two choices, which were to have a perfect solution or no solution at all," Gov. Patrick told ABC News at the National Governors Association meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi. "There is a cautionary tale for Washington because people are going to fret over a perfect solution and because there isn't one, we're going to get stuck -- or we are at risk of being stuck."

Concern about the floundering Obama health care plan is rooted in memories of HillaryCare, the Clinton administration's bold attempt to remake health care in 1993. First Lady Hillary Clinton was offered several compromise solutions that would have gotten her much, but not all, of what she wanted. She insisted on "all or nothing." The result was a plan that never made it to a Congressional vote and resulted in a political debacle for Democrats.

Mr. Obama is smart enough to scale back his ambitions to win passage of something from Congress and then declare "victory." From the comments of his allies, I detect the first effort on their part to prepare liberal diehards for the fact they may end up with less than a full loaf this year.
-- John Fund

BREAKING::: Action Alert - S. 1390: National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010

A couple of hours ago Majority Leader Reid filed a hate crimes amendment to the DOD Authorization Bill. I respectfully request that you please Vote NO on any amendments to S. 1390 which are related to Hate Crimes Legislation, for the following reasons:

(1) This Hate Crimes Legislation is so controversial that it must be considered as a stand-alone bill, not rushed as an amendment.
(2) Hate Crimes legislation is unconstitutional. The 14th Amendment requires that all citizens be given equal treatment under the law. Hate crimes laws create special classes of victims and do not treat all victims fairly.
(3) Hate Crimes legislation could ultimately lead to prosecution for thoughts and restrictions on free speech and religious liberty. Although it prosecutes only “acts of violence” and does not prosecute expressions or opinions, it opens the door to examining the thoughts of not only a criminal, but everyone with whom he may have come into contact. This bill could be used to advance the politically correct agenda by providing greater protections for certain classes of people. Future legislation could expand these protections and place restrictions on religious liberty and free speech.
(4) Hate Crimes are unnecessary. Many states already have a hate crimes law and there is no evidence that the states are failing to prosecute hate crimes. States which do not have hate crimes laws still prosecute the crimes under existing criminal laws. A federal hate crimes bill would only increase the control and scope of the federal government.
(5) All crimes are hate crimes!

Additionally for these reasons, I respectfully ask that you honor the Constitution, and respect States rights in future Hate Crimes legislation and vote NO in the future.

I look forward to hearing your position in this matter, and will continue to follow your actions and record!

Sincerely,

-Name-
-Address-
-City State Zip-
- Email/Phone -

Corzine Plays a Weak Hand, Weakly - Corzine Plays the Bush Card - WSJ.com's Political Diary

Democratic Governor Jon Corzine of New Jersey is being dragged down by the weak economy. Up for re-election this November, a new Quinnipiac University poll finds him trailing former federal prosecutor Chris Christie by 53% to 41% among likely voters.
Mr. Corzine's basic problem is that only a third of New Jersey residents think he is doing a good job, and they blame him for high taxes -- cited by 45% as the state's biggest problem -- and a general decline in the state's quality of life. All this plays to Mr. Christie's strengths as a corruption-busting prosecutor who says he will offer "real choices rather than fake reform" if he is elected.
That said, Mr. Corzine will no doubt spend millions from his personal fortune to paint his opponent as an inexperienced extremist. In 1993, such tactics helped revive unpopular Governor James Florio enough that he lost his re-election bid to Republican Christie Whitman by only one percentage point.
But Mr. Corzine will have to attack carefully. One of his favorite tactics appears to be already backfiring. Linking Mr. Christie to George W. Bush is falling flat with voters. Quinnipiac found that only a tenth of voters say Mr. Corzine's attempts to tie his opponent to the Bush era are fair, with 77% of voters saying Mr. Corzine should stick to state issues. The poll also reveals the governor's weakness among his own base voters. Mr. Christie currently wins almost a fifth of votes of both Democrats and African-Americans, high numbers for a Republican in the Garden State. Mr. Corzine clearly hopes to remedy this shortfall with a rally with President Obama in Holmdel on Thursday. This fall's race will be not only a test of Mr. Corzine's wallet but of Mr. Obama's continued popularity amid a declining economy.
-- John Fund

Power of 5 USA

RNC Chairman Steele on Sen. 'We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability to be ridiculed and passed over. With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they have some idea of what they are doing.'

In a Capitol Hill press conference, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) pointed to the success of the U.S. Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard to performance. Approximately 74 percent of postal employees lack any job skills, making this agency the single largest U.S. employer of Persons of Inability.

Private-sector industries with good records of non-discrimination against the Inept include retail sales (72%), the airline industry (68%), and home improvement 'warehouse' stores (65%). At the state government level, the Department of Motor Vehicles also has an excellent record of hiring Persons of Inability (a whopping 83%).

Under The Americans With No Abilities Act, more than 25 million 'middle man' positions will be created, with important-sounding titles but little real responsibility, thus providing an illusory sense of purpose and performance.

Mandatory non-performance-based raises and promotions will be given so as to guarantee upward mobility for even the most inept employees. The legislation provides substantial tax breaks to corporations that promote a significant number of Persons of Inability into middle-management positions, and gives a tax credit to small and medium-sized businesses that agree to hire one clueless worker for every two talented hires.

Finally, the AWNAA contains tough new measures to make it more difficult to discriminate against the Non-abled, banning, for example, discriminatory interview questions such as, 'Do you have any skills or experience that relate to this job?'

'As a Non-abled person, I can't be expected to keep up with people who have something going for them,' said Mary Lou Gertz, who lost her position as a lug-nut twister at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan, due to her inability to remember 'rightey tightey, lefty loosey.' 'This new law should be real good for people like me,' Gertz added. With the passage of this bill, Gertz and millions of other untalented citizens will finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Said Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL): 'As a Senator with no abilities, I believe the same privileges that elected officials enjoy ought to be extended to every American with no abilities. It is our duty as lawmakers to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her inadequacy, with some sort of space to take up in this great nation and a good salary for doing so.'

Channeling Lincoln...

I was just having a conversation last night at a Lincoln Day Dinner, and the consensus at the table was that we understand the compound folks. If I had kids, I would be stocking up, and going into lock down.

At this dinner, the Pike County Historical Society had brought the American flag that Lincoln's Head was placed the night he was shot in Ford's Theater. On a Macro level we see evidence of that with the series of ineffective solutions to date from Congress, the Fed, etc.

I think that in man's recognition of mortality, survival instincts have kicked in, but in recent history, it has been rare that a person has had to "fight to the death". Think about it. The last global battle was WORLD WAR II!!! How long did it take for the world to recognize that there was problem? When the IPO, DOT BOMB happened, it was limited damage, because of the exposure was mainly with paper valuations. But it occurred after too many people tried to get rich quick without a sound business plan, and straying away from basic business fundamentals of quantifiable capital and demonstrative revenue. At the core of the current issue, is the same thing that happened with the tech, the capital was an "IDEA" that was not quantifiable. Whether the IDEA of Capital was a Mortgaged Back Security or the speculative new housing developments that folks were guessing that they would be able to quickly flip the house, the capital was not QUANTIFIABLE and the REVENUE was not Demonstrative....Money was made on the SALE not on the sustainability of the model. Folks were just guessing.

I remember when the Margin calls first started coming in...and I watched millions in my portfolio dwindle away... but we took our lumps and moved on. The challenge this time is that the folks just want to pass their problem to the next person. No one wants to take their lumps. I strongly believe that this mentality is steeped in the removal of discipline from several generations. Without a mechanism to reinforce PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY FOR ONE'S ACTION, we are in effect, ineffective with handling, dealing or overcoming a challenge as an individual.

I mean just think...we have books on tape, so you don't have to read anymore, we have microwaves and TV dinners, so you don't have to know how to cook, PDA's so you don't have to memorize phone numbers and appointments. We have a country of PROJECT MANAGERS, with no practical life experiences, so they are just accepting whatever status report that comes in and updates them on what is happening to them. Any person that had a bit of practical experience could not in good conscience believe that there was NO REAL ESTATE BUBBLE. Price in relation to poor construction and too much supply? The salvage value of real property on new was like 5 years.

A culture of people who came to accept DISPOSABLE housing and no longer demanding DURABLE housing... Not understanding what happened to them, and not knowing how to resolve the issue, or power through the difficulty....

Well, here we are....

I suggest we do what we believe, pull up our bootstraps and wade through this Swamp of Bull$#it, Lead by example and POWER THROUGH. On the 200th anniversary of the birth of the man that pulled the United States of America Back together when Most saw no light at the end of the tunnel. Our Founder Abraham Lincoln would expect NO LESS!!!! It won't be easy or painless. THERE WILL BE CASUALTIES. BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER... We each have a little Lincoln inside of us. Channel that and put on the whole Armour of GOD. The truth and history is with us, go take an nap and get some rest... YOU WILL NEED IT IN THE BATTLE AHEAD!!!!

What’s that again about helping the middle class?

What’s that again about the middle class?

The recent request for additional support for Chrysler has me taken aback. As a small business owner, I know what it means to me. However, It would be Fantastic if we put some thoughts down to share and vet through discussion.

So what do you think? The current administration is thinking that this would be good for the workers...

I think that the unions, in their quest to "secure" a worker's job for "all prosperity" did not prepare or enable that worker for CHANGE in the workplace, introduction of new technologies, and global competition. So now why is that my fault? If the union is not attractive and provides not VALUE PROPOSITION to the worker, to motivate them to join, why should they be publicly harassed?

I think that the Unions should go to the woodshed and recreate themselves instead of asking the Gubment that don't know nuffin' 'bout runnin' no bidness to legislate.

Thoughts?

Top Secret Stimulus - Post from WSJ Political Diary

Democrats apparently are in a mad rush to pass their stimulus bill before the public or Members of Congress have much chance to read it. Just a few days ago the House overwhelmingly passed a new procedural rule requiring 48-hour public notice before any bill faces a roll call vote. The idea was to allow voters to review bills online before they are approved by Congress. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been crowing about this new era of transparency.

But the stimulus bill, which numbers more than 700 pages and was just renegotiated by the House and Senate Democratic leadership, may be voted on less than 24 hours after the agreement was reached. Last night, House Republicans were vocally complaining that they still didn't know the line-by-line details of the biggest spending bill to hit Capitol Hill since World War II. We also hear that House Blue Dog Democrats are furious with Ms. Pelosi for forcing a vote that clearly violates the party's own brand new sunshine rule.

Many squeamish House Democrats who represent mostly Republican districts are getting slammed back home for voting in favor of the original House stimulus bill. These moderates are also angry that the Democratic leadership bill made more room for pork by slicing Barack Obama's much-heralded tax cut for families by 20%. Couples were supposed to get $1,000, now they will get $800 off their income taxes.

A House Republican leadership staff member tells me: "Yep, looks like they will waive that [disclosure] rule even before the ink is dry on it." Rep. Dave Camp, ranking Republican on the Ways and Means Committee, adds: "Frankly, because this process has been so rushed, we are literally flying blind."

One rumor is that Democrats want to speedily enact the bill in the House without public vetting because Nancy Pelosi has to fly to Italy over the weekend. Democrats in the leadership are also getting weary of this stimulus debate. They're aware of the shrinking public approval and want to strong-arm the bill through Congress before rank-and-file House members get cold feet.

So the era of transparency and openness on Capitol Hill has come and gone. Mr. Camp pleads: "The American people have a right to know what's in this bill." Ms. Pelosi thinks it best that they learn about the bill's contents only after Barack Obama has signed it into law.

-- Stephen Moore

Response from an Email Chain -

We MUST engage and embrace - which will in turn always GROW our party, re-enforce our message, strengthen our bench, hell, at this point Build our bench, the GOP has been pushing people off the bench for years...( I mean we really can't complain that Obama's Cabinet is a retread of Clinton's Team...Bush 43 was a re-tread of Bush 41 and Reagan) There is lots of young private sector talent that we should be recruiting... The USDOT reports that $12 billion is needed annually to maintain and improve our transit systems. FTA reports that $4 billion in existing New Start funding agreements are outstanding.

Our nation's transit and intercity rail systems are struggling to meet maintenance, repair and capital needs. In a national poll released earlier this month by Transportation for America and the National Association of Realtors, fully 80% of respondents said stimulus funds should not only create jobs, but also help the goals of reducing oil dependency, improving the environment, and increasing transportation options. Now is the time to increase much needed funding for public transportation.

Transportation For America has identified more than $5 billion in new transit extension and rail projects that could be ready to go in 120 days, generating over 178,000 new jobs. These investments could put people to work in the manufacturing sector building new rail cars and bus vehicles, in the steel and concrete industries, in design and planning professions, and in their construction and operation. New transit lines have also been demonstrated to generate substantial economic development, which yield economic benefits far beyond the life of the recovery bill.

Yes, Virginia -- There is a Feminist in Sarah Palin!

This past Tuesday, Sarah Palin made the most explicitly feminist political speech by ANYONE running for national office in the last 20 years. She said,
“Women of my generation were allowed finally to make more of our own choices with education, with career, and I have never forgotten that we owe that opportunity to women, to feminists who came before us,” Palin said. “The belief in equal opportunity is not just the cause of feminists, it’s the creed of our country — equal opportunity.”

Many people are trying to marginalize this lady, and discredit her accomplishments. She has worked harder than Obama & Biden combined. She has more executive experience, marked record of achievement and increased responsibility.

When was the last time you heard a MAN having a ethics violation for having his staff or security detail run women for him?

When was the last time you heard about how much a man spent on his apparel?

Why don't we talk about the abuse of power and the subversive tactic to rid us of our Free Speech...and One person One Vote? Or are we to accept the thug politics and stomp all over the Constitution.

And what happened to that press complaint "We don't have access?" She is the MOST accessible candidate.

Electing Obama will set the progress of African Americans back 20 years. Women further. Remember when they first implemented affirmative action, and unqualified people were getting hired?

This past week, I sat on a panel for AC360. I thought my positions and arguments were valid and was open for debate. The attacks I have received, had NOTHING to do with what I said, but how I looked, or suggested that I was a slave of some sort...HUH?

Let's talk about the issues. One thing that needs to resonate among women is that in 2008 with 52%, women decide. I ask each of you reach into your soul and open you mind. There are 16.5% women who are still undecided, help them decide McCain-Palin.

The "Ironed Jawed Angels" ask no less.

How Important is Coal to Pennsylvania? Obama-Biden Does not get it!

How important is coal to Pennsylvania? Here are some facts.

Most anthracite coal is found in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania has 29 billion tons of coal reserves, or 6.1% of the country's reserves.
The combined direct and indirect contributions of the coal industry to Pennsylvania's economy are more than $10 billion.
Using more than 57 million tons, Pennsylvania ranks fourth in coal use.
Pennsylvania employs more than 9,300 miners.
Pennsylvania distributes more than 75 million tons of coal each year.
Pennsylvania has 82 underground mines and 225 surface mines.
About 58% of the electricity used in Pennsylvania is produced by coal.
Pennsylvania produces about 7% of the country's coal supply.
Pennsylvania has 23 coal-fired power plants.

Source American Coal Foundation

Recently, Mr. Biden made some comments(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rXyTRT-NZg ) about coal and where they stand...YIKES! and he says he is from Scranton??? Maybe he forgot what happened to Scranton when the coal industry fell.

And they want the huddled masses to think that McCain doesn't get it?
There is so much that this ticket does not and will not ever understand about this country and the people they wish to "lead". They want to make us feel that the government will save us, when all the while for decades, as we seek to re-tool out communities and extend infrastructure and technologies to the "last mile", we have long been abandoned by that government, and have fended for ourselves.
Well, Mr. Biden and Mr. Obama, let me help you "get it". We are a resilient people. We believe in ourselves, our families and our country. We have small businesses and we help our neighbors. We care for our old and feed our poor. We go to church. We believe that roosters always come home to roost, and a person is always held accountable for their own actions. This is the end of your belittling the people who live on Main Street, because on November 4, 2008, we who are called to a cause greater than ourselves will be voting for McCain-Palin. That cause is not about making history, but more about putting Country First.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://republicaninnepa.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-important-is-coal-to-pennsylvania.html' title='How Important is Coal to Pennsylvania? People must holistically accept that after almost 20 years of "serial entrepreneurs" and the growth of outsourcing for staff augmentation and special project consultants, a culture of "get in, get out, get it done, has now entered the political arena. Gone are the days, where companies, and now the political process, had the "luxury" of only finding talent in long tenured, short resume candidates. It is no longer rare to find that ideal resource with a 3 page resume, and 7 companies/positions, in 20 years. The workforce of today has a culture that in order to get a better salary, or a promotion, they have to leave the company, that they are at, and find a "greener pastures."
This model works, as long as there are proven results that are clear and demonstrative.

Gov. Palin has that track record of proven results. This is clear and demonstrative evidence of change you can believe in. She is a LONG TERM asset.

On Sarah Palin...

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
I find it very interesting that some people are having 'heartburn" with this. I think that strategically, it shows that McCain is thinking about the country, the party, and the future. He has his opponents scrambling, since this was not out of the 'playbook' that they had for McCain. That was first very obvious, as they unsuccessfully try to tie him to Bush '43. So it will take the O-Biden (now he's Irish) Team longer to come up with a plan. If the first few 'attacks' are any indication… then, as long as McCain stays "on his message" then the American People will see the truth.

Another strategic thing that must be considered is in choosing Gov. Palin, age 44, with a win, she is a shoe-in for 2012, if McCain chooses not to run again, and also for 2016. In 8 years, she will only be 52.

This helps with the rebuilding process. Lest we forget, the Republican party, and the Conservative movement, have no BENCH! We have not been growing leaders, getting them started in the political process. Placing them into position for the future, making them a part of the political process. I don’t think that the message that we want to send to Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation V, that they are not an option. This is a generation of socially conscious, aggressive, people, who feel they have something to contribute, and will use alternate means to accomplish their goals.

AMAZINGLY, Obama forgot one of the bullet points of his own speech “Sometimes change does not happen in Washington, Sometimes change COMES TO Washington". Discarding Sarah's EXECUTIVE experience as a Mayor insults most Americans, because America, is a collection of small towns. Discarding Sarah's EXECUTIVE experience as Ethics Commissioner and Chairman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, upsets their apple cart, since this is evidence that it is the people and not “Big Oil” that will be the priority of this administration. Discarding Sarah's EXECUTIVE experience as a Small Business Owner, insults the fabric of American ingenuity, accountability and determination. Discarding Sarah’s EXECUTIVE experience as a WORKING MOTHER, is an insult to anyone who has managed a family. Running a home & family is the quintessential executive experience of managing people, process, budget, tools, etc.

Is Obama & his team implying that only Washington experience that they consider relevant? If so, then this shows that it is HE that is “more of the same”.

Score the Speaker Events

NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA CHAPTER

COALITION FOR A CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 23, 2008

Contact: Tanya Callaway Crews 202-487-8077-cell phone

Communications: Charlie Spano 570-604-0809-cell phone

Email: tanyacrews@gmail.com

www.ccmajority.org

CCM of Northeastern PA plans convention events

Tanya Callaway Crews, President of the Northeastern Chapter, Coalition for a Conservative Majority announces that the CCM of NEPA will host two events during each of the party conventions. These will be “Scoring the Speakers” events where participants will anaylze and discuss the acceptance speeches by each of the major party candidates.

“Anyone who understands that smaller government, lower taxes, a strong national defense of America and America's borders, energy independence and adherence to the Constitution as written are critical to America's future is invited.” according to Ms. Callaway Crews. The Coalition for a Conservative Majority is a grassroots conservative advocacy group. The local chapter recently completed a trip to Washington to support conservative congress members as they continue to press for energy independence.

The first “Score the Speaker” will be held on Thursday, August 28 , beginning at 7 pm at Whistle’s Pub and Eatery, 126 Franklin Ave. in Scranton. The Democratic nominee’s speech that night will be analyzed from a conservative perspective. Refreshments will be served. The second ‘Score the Speaker” will be held on Thursday, September 4 at a location to be announced.

Northeast Pennsylvania Activists Create New Conservative Grassroots Organization

Northeast Pennsylvania Activists Create New Conservative Grassroots Organization
For Immediate Release
July 9, 2008
Contact: Tanya Callaway Crews
Email: tanyacrews@gmail.com
www.ccmajority.org

Northeast Pennsylvania Activists Create New
Conservative Grassroots Organization

Clarks Summit, PA - A new grassroots organization aimed at furthering conservative activism started in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre-area and is looking for like-minded members. The group, Coalition for a Conservative Majority - Northeast Pennsylvania, is the local chapter of the national organization founded by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and Chaired by former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.

As the first order of business, the CCM chapter has requested meetings with their area members of Congress, whether they're conservative, liberal, or anything in between. Chapter President Tanya Callaway Crews said earlier today the group will focus on monitoring federal and state policy to ensure conservative thought is represented. "It's time conservatives take a page out of the liberals' playbook and start holding our politicians accountable for the actions here and in Washington," Crews said. "CCM will be the primary organization that will hold their feet to the fire."

The National Chairman of CCM, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, said the Northeast Pennsylvania group is one of 8 targeted media markets with a burgeoning CCM chapter. "Across the country we are seeing candidates who run as Barry Goldwater, then govern more like Walter Mondale. CCM is here to keep their voting records in line with true conservative ideology."

During their recent monthly meeting, the organization elected a board and developed an organizational plan. The aim of the group, said Crews, is to unite the different factions of conservatives - security, social, and fiscal - into one organization that can work on a variety of fronts. At the end of a private telephone conversation thanking Boykin for her efforts, Representative Dartez said, "Talk to you later, Buckwheat."

Known for beginning her passionate speeches with the phrase “I am proud to be an American true, but I am even more proud to be a Louisianan first”, Tanya Callaway Crews today is heartbroken.
“I am saddened today with the lack of media attention or outrage in the community with the recent events that have happened in Louisiana. I continue to be amazed with the “surprise” in the community over the Jena 6. It was a lack of involvement in the early stages that allowed the madness to continue. So here we are on the eve of another election in Louisiana, and the embers are warming for another firestorm, and no one is sounding the alarm.”

Project 21 chairman Mychal Massie is criticizing both the lawmaker for saying it and the media for once again appearing to take a pass on reporting about a liberal politician's racial foible. "Representative Dartez's comments were offensive and pejorative," said Massie. "There is no way in this day and age that 'Buckwheat' can be construed as anything but an insult, and there is no reason a politician should get a pass based on their record or party affiliation. She should resign her seat."Crews notes that the youth of today are passionate and have few outlets to release their feelings. Young people are fed up the ideas that they hear at home from their parents, which continue to be unaddressed. They are watching the adults and how we interact with each other and how passive we have become and they feel they need to act on our behalf. “We need to show our youth how the system can work to correct injustices and racist behavior, before the firestorm wells up once again in our schools, otherwise kids will be bringing Buckwheat wigs to school.” Crews explains.

Tanya Callaway Crews served as Prosecutor for Louisiana’s Fourth Judicial District’s Teen Court from 1984 to 1988, and served on the Governor’s Commission on Juvenile Justice.
